Today, we discuss the BBI aka: the government blaming the people for its inequities. The BBI has been advertised by our "precious" leaders as the key to the dreams of Kenya. It is supposed to bring harmony and prosperity to the land. But the truth is, if you would ask a countryman what the BBI was, they wouldn't know. And so after hearing it being discussed in the news and during a visit to the salon, I sought answers. You see, it is my belief that here in Kenya, even though we have complete access to the constitution online, we know nothing about our laws. Like for example the extensive operation to acquire a gun or the fact that anyone above the age of 18 can be come president. And this is a huge issue in African countries, where the youth are more occupied with America's laws and mainstream mainstream trends to care about their own.
In my thirst for the true meaning of BBI, I had asked my parents, who didn't what it was either. So I went to the most trusted source: Google. And there I find the final draft of the BBI (in a weird font nonetheless). The history of BBI can be traced back to the world acclaimed " Handshake", between our president and the opposition leader - I'm still confused on why Miguna is not back home, as he seemed to be actually sane, with Atwoli of course. This of course was seen as a symbol of unity in the country.
The BBI was written up by a committee and was based of the opinions of Kenyans. Now I don't know about you, but I didn't see unemployed 20 years olds going around asking questions, nor did I ever see announcements to head to a governmental office. The BBI has focus points, with the most stressed being: giving the people incentive. In these surveys that they supposedly did, it is stated that Kenyans feel a lack of unity and lack of patriotic duties. BBI also seeks to save the marginalised groups and include women.
All this is well and good but I have a lot of issues. The first one being: Why isn't the government doing this already? Why do we need a new constitution? The old constitution is fine, compared to the old one which was completely divisive. Each year, we hear the same things, "we'll include new women","we will stop tribalism", "we'll deal with corruption". But these things haven't happened since our independence. The BBI is written in a self - righteous way that glorifies the government and blames the citizens for the ugliness and mess in the country. They claim BBI is going to fix the deep tribalism in Kenya, yet there are the ones preaching at their campaigns about how a tribe has wronged their tribe and how a tribe is should stick together. As I said STUPIDITY.
The tribe issue is described many times in the document and seems to amplify that they will be helping the "marginalised" groups and so here I sit and think: Who are the marginalised group? Because as far as I'm concerned, no matter your tribe, you are a Kenyan. So I am very curious to learn how they're going to involve the "marginalised" groups, will each tribe get a percentage in parliament? Will they be having ANOTHER taskforce to work on different tribes? Which anyone with common sense sees how divisive that is. But you know we have a tribe problem and the BBI is going to miraculously fix it.
A change to the consitution was never proposed by the citizens, it is all for monetary gains. They want to expand the parliament, which is complete nonsense seeing as we already have an excessive amount of constituencies. We also know that implementing this is going to take a lot of money. That's why Uhuru Kenyatta pushing for this while the country has multiple debts is another foolish move.( China is going to want it's money back at some point). But as I said, this is all a ploy to hold on to power and money.
Of course there are sensible politicians(you know there's a real problem when even Sonko doesn't support you). Even Atwoli -someone I dearly respect, has been engulfed in this wave. So shoutout to Boniface Mwangi, Ahmednasir Abdullahi, all those supporting #LindaKatiba and everyone who'll vote against the BBI.
